Roland Fantom X6: Don't Like Synth Bass? Record Your Own! (Part One)
The Roland Fantom X6 is a very versatile synth workstation loaded with many beautiful sounds, but say you don't think the bass sounds real enough for you. Warren Harris of Roland US grabs a bass and shows us how to record audio into the Fantom X6 workstation and manipulate the bass tone as if it were one of the Fantom's built-in sounds.

Roland GAIA SH-01 Synth Demo video clip

Roland GAIA SH-01 Synth Demo video clip Frankfurt show 2010 the Roland...

Released at the Frankfurt show 2010 the Roland GAIA SH-01 Synthesizer is effectively 3 synths in one, basically Roland have taken modeling algorhythms and created "Virtual Analogue" sounds that use vintage style synthesizer architecture. There are 3 oscillators powering resonant filters, multi-shape LFOs, and amplifiers, plus nine envelope generators and a massive 64 note polyphony - like I said, this is virtually 3 synths in one ...

The effects chain can be stacked with up to 5 effects being used simultaneously, the effects include reverb, distortion, fuzz, bit crash, flanger, phaser, pitch shifter, low boost, and delay with panning and tempo sync, whilst dedicated control knobs are provided for tweaking the effects in real time. The 37 note keyboard is full size but the scaled down ocatves and lightweight chassis (the SH-01 weighs in at a mere 4Kg) mean that this synthesizer is easily transportable.

Roland have given this keyboard much thought, and realising that there's a whole new generation of players that have never seen the old style synth architechture, they have made the layout of this keyboard simple and intuitive. The logically designed front panel shows the signal path from left to right - This helps beginners understand synthesis, while experienced players will love the instant gratification of hands-on control during performance.

The on-board phrase recorder not only records the notes you play but will also record any changes and modifications to the control knobs and sliders during your performance and these will be stored along with the keystrokes. For further moments of inspiration there's also an Arpeggiator and Roland's D-beam controller, the user can connect the SH-01 directly to a computer (Mac or PC) with one simple USB cable, and stream audio directly to the software of your choice.

The USB ports can also be used to transmit and receive MIDI data, and to store your patches and phrases (recorded with the Phrase Recorder) to a USB memory stick. For integrating with external devices, the EXT input lets you connect external audio sources such as an MP3-player and play along with your favourite songs or backing tracks, making it suitable for practice and live performance. Alternatively you may wish to manipulate the incoming audio with three Center Cancel modes, which let you eliminate pre-recorded vocals, guitars, or bass.

The cherry on this cake is that this keyboard supports battery operation as an alternative to the A/C adapter using 8 x AA batteries, whilst a battery-life indicator on the front panel ensures that you won't lose power unexpectedly. Because of the battery option the GAIA SH-01 Synthesizer really is a "play anywhere" keyboard and its lightweight chassis means that it's a cinch to transport ...
